Video: Near-collision reported on Sea-Tac runway Larger screen SeaTac, Wash. –  Two planes came perilously close to colliding at Sea-Tac Airport earlier this month, the National Transportation Safety Board reports. Airtran flight 227, a Boeing 737, had just landed at Sea-Tac from Baltimore at the same time Northwest flight 106, an Airbus A332, was departing for London. Fire near Yosemite National Park hurts tourist business
AP Yosemite Falls YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — Haze from a massive wildfire near Yosemite National Park is leaving one of California’s most popular destinations shrouded in smoke at the height of the tourist season. But park rangers expect the fire will keep very few people away. At summer’s peak, as many as 4,000 visitors a day stream into the park. But this time, those seeking to photograph the famed peaks instead are taking shots of monoliths obscured by flying ash blowing in from the fire burning just 12 miles outside the park. Hotels, stores and most restaurants in the park are open, but are operating on generators. The transmission line that feeds power to Yosemite was destroyed in the fire. Fisherman survives cold night stuck in Utah creek

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

MURRAY, Utah — A Utah fisherman is recovering after spending about 16 hours in a frigid mountain stream trapped up to his waist in numbingly cold 55-degree water.

It was an 11-year-old camper looking for firewood who finally heard Dean Ririe’s screams Monday morning and got his dad to check things out.

A nurse says Ririe’s body temperature dropped 33 degrees below the normal 98.6 degrees.

The painful ordeal began when Ririe got stuck in rocks and was unable to pull himself free. His waders then sprung a leak and filled quickly with the achingly cold water.

He stayed awake through the entire episode, saying he was "afraid to fall asleep."

Ririe’s right foot may have to be amputated.
