By Associated Press HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Paul Newman broached the subject of his philanthropic legacy several years ago while fishing with friends Robert Forrester and David Horvitz off the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Even though he was a Hollywood icon - a 10-time Academy Award nominee known for his performances in such classic films as “Cool Hand Luke” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” - it was a rare moment in which Newman reflected on how he would be remembered after his death, Horvitz recalled Sunday.

The Boss to play Super Bowl halftime

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform at the 2009 Super Bowl halftime show in Tampa, Fla., the NFL and NBC announced Sunday night.

Continuing a run of major talent that has lately included the Rolling Stones, U2, Paul McCartney, Prince and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the biggest television event in the nation will showcase one of its most beloved rock ‘n’ roll artists. By Associated Press PERTH, Australia (AP) - Heath Ledger’s 2-year-old daughter Matilda Rose will inherit all of her father’s estate, Ledger’s father says.

By Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) - Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds did a little rushing into it after all.

The couple married this weekend, according to publicist Meredith O’Sullivan. She did not provide details.

Us Weekly reported on its Web site Sunday that the small wedding took place at a resort outside Vancouver, British Columbia. Guests included Scarlett’s mother, Melanie Sloan, and her brother, Adrian Johansson, the magazine said.

The couple announced their engagement in May.

Heather Locklear arrested in Calif. for DUI

By Associated Press MONTECITO, Calif. (AP) - Heather Locklear was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance in the upscale Santa Barbara area, authorities said Sunday.

Locklear, 47, was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer Saturday afternoon after a resident reported seeing the actress leaving a parking lot and “driving erratically,” patrol spokesman Tom Marshall said.

The officer noticed Locklear’s car parked on a state highway and blocking a lane in Montecito, a wealthy community about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles. (Read the full post about ‘Heather Locklear arrested in Calif. for DUI’…)

Oregon mailman made pot deliveries, too

PORTLAND — A citizen’s complaint has led a pot-dealing postman from package delivery to prison time.

Ronald Berkan, a 48-year-old postman in Veronia, Ore., was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison, following his guilty plea last April on one charge of marijuana distribution to a person under 21 years old.

The delivery occurred on his mail route in the Cedar Mill area of Washington County.

As part of the sentence, almost $3,000 of drug proceeds Berkan had collected was also forfeited.

The legal investigation began in 2006 when federal authorities received a citizen’s complaint that a uniformed postal carrier was offering marijuana for sale on his route.

10,000 NW soldiers headed to Iraq

FORT LEWIS, Wash. — The Army is sending about 10,000 Fort Lewis troops to Iraq in a period from this winter into the summer of 2009.

A spokeswoman says they are the I (First) Corps headquarters unit, and the 3rd and 5th Stryker brigades.

Maj. Kathleen Turner says this is the first combat deployment for the I Corps headquarter unit since the Korean War. She says it will take over in Baghdad as the command and control for multinational units in Iraq.

This will be the first deployment for the 5th Stryker brigade and the third for the 3rd Stryker brigade.

The Fort Lewis troops are part of 26,000 the Pentagon is deploying to maintain 14 combat brigades in Iraq.

Arm recovered from May boating accident

NEWMAN LAKE, Wash. — A Newman Lake woman made a grisly discovery Friday evening when she found a decomposing arm on her beachfront property.

The boat propeller that severed a woman’s arm accidentally on Newman Lake.

Deputy Shawn Audie responded to the “found arm” call and determined it was human.  His report indicates that the arm probably was that one lost in a boating accident that occurred on May 28th.

In that incident, 28-year-old Robert Wayne Kienel of Spokane was operating a newly-purchased boat when his wife was thrown from the bow and into the water.  She lost her arm when the boat’s propeller struck her.

Some upset about Islam DVD delivered with newspaper

A DVD on radical Islam was delivered to homes along with the Sunday paper over the weekend and although the Oregonian said it was an advertisement, some complained it was spreading propaganda.

Oregonian officials said the DVD was within the realm of free speech. It arrived on millions of doorsteps nestled in the newspaper, not just in Oregon, but in newspapers across the country.

The DVD title “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West” was getting circulated by a nonprofit group called The Clarion Fund.

Police receive tips about baby left at Federal Way church

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Police say they have received several tips from the public about a baby abandoned at a Federal Way church.

Surveillance video at Steel Lake Presbyterian Church at 1829 S 308 Street shows a teenager or young woman dropping off the child just after 2 a.m. Sunday, wrapped in a beach towel in 49-degree weather.

The child was discovered five hours later and taken to the hospital, where physicians determined that the baby was no more than 12 hours old.

The baby is in fair condition.
